The Christian’s Response to Homosexuality

The Christian’s Response to Homosexuality

  1. Remember the open practice of homosexuality was common:
    1. In the Old Testament:
      1. Genesis 13:13; 18:16-19:29
      2. 1 Kings 14:24; 15:12 “perverted persons” religious rituals
    2. In the first century:
      1. Romans 1:24-32
      2. 1 Corinthians 6:9; 1 Timothy 1:10
  2. Stop acting as though homosexual behavior is the unpardonable sin – Mark 3:30. Alongside homosexuality in Romans 1 is envy, strife, deceit, whisperers, ignorance, proud, undiscerning, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful, disobedient to parents.
  3. Stop openly showing or overselling your personal feelings of this sin – Romans 12:18
    1. There are already enough drama queens in the world.
    2. Think of how Paul must have conducted himself in his contemporary society in order to win the souls of those entangled in this particular (and other) sins – 1 Cor 6:9-11
    3. Speaking of opposing liberals in the church, Wm Woodson said, “We are not at liberty to violate some biblical principles in order to defend others.” (1999 sermon at Dexter MO)
  4. Remember that Jesus died for all men in the same way He died for you:
    1. John 3:16
    2. 1 Timothy 2:6
    3. 1 John 2:1-2
  5. Refuse to let people define themselves by their temptations.(Thank you Glenn Colley for this one!)
  6. Don’ beat people over the head with the Bible – 1 Tim 2:24-26
    1. The Bible is a sword, not a club.
    2. People need their hearts pricked, not their heads bruised.
  7. Refuse to permit people excuse their sin.
    1. There is no scientific evidence that homosexuality is natural. There is no “gay gene.”
    2. There is no biblical evidence that God approves homosexuality or those who practice it.
    3. This goes for any sin, but especially sexual sins: Hebrews 13:4; 1 Corinthians 7:2
    4. We are called to holiness – 1 Peter 1:15-16; 2 Corinthians 7:1; Hebrews 12:14
